Minor drain on the economy

Monday 5th October 2026, 2.50pm (day 5,520)

Plant and coins, 5/10/26

I am led to believe that the amount of loose change kicking around under sofas, in forgotten jars and, as here, on window sills is an aspect of the money supply on which economists are obliged to keep at least half an eye. After all, here is around €3.70 in currency which has been exported from the economy of the Eurozone, specifically Luxembourg, and if I forget it’s there the next time I head across the Channel it may never be used again. Have tens of millions of people leaving their loose change around and you are draining capital that might have build a school or two. Though not, of course, as much as your average tax-avoiding billionaire.

Public retraction

Thursday 5th January 2023, 5.00pm (day 4,151)

Public retratcion, 5/1/23

There really isn’t anything happening at the moment; and not a great deal to be done about this, until the weekend anyway. In the pub, our landlady feels the need to retract a statement presumably made over the Christmas period. The grammar is not mine, no complaints please.

Good hard cash

Monday 26th April 2021, 12.35pm (day 3,532)

Forty quid, 26/4/21

On a day working at home and a quest for something, anything, to photograph, my eyes alighted on this sunlit pair of purples. Well, why not take a photo of cash. We’re seeing decreasing amounts of it — I don’t mean money (I admit that my income has been unaffected by the Covid crap and I sympathise completely with all of those for whom this is not the case), but just cash, the stuff you hold. Even then it’s all an abstraction, isn’t it. Yet look at the detail in these notes. They’re aesthetically pleasing if you ask me.

I become a millionaire (sort of)

Friday 22nd November 2019, 1.20pm (day 3,011)

Indonesian currency, 22/11/19

I’m off on another one of my work trips, and from this post it must be fairly obvious where — indeed, I post this from Jakarta airport on Saturday afternoon local time, although my journey isn’t over yet. (Saturday’s post might end up being from my stopover in Doha, anyway.) I thought I would post this shot because of the pleasingly large numbers on the banknotes: there are 1.3 million rupiah here. Not that that means I will be living it up — the cup of tea I have just bought cost me 23,000.
