Arriving at the Etihad

Wednesday 7th January 2026, 6.35pm (day 5,249)

Etihad arrival, 7/1/26

Another picture of fans arriving at a football stadium, but unlike Sunday, at least we saw a game today. Manchester City v Brighton was my first Premier League game since April 2022 and only the second in the last six years. Habits have changed…. but I suppose I still feel a certain sense of allegiance. And no, not to Manchester City. It was nice to see some old mates in the away end tonight, £30 for a ticket was an acceptable price and a 1-1 draw was a reasonable result. I pick this shot because of its Blade Runner-like qualities, as much as anything. Let’s turn on all those lights…. and worry about the electricity bills later, shall we?

Sprinklers in action

Saturday 29th September 2018, 2.05pm (day 2,592)

Etihad sprinklers, 29/9/18

Football again, but definitely not non-league today. The Etihad Stadium is the home of current, and probably future, champions Manchester City, where even the pre-match watering of the pitch is done on a suitably grandiose scale. To call these massive jets of liquid ‘sprinklers’ rather diminishes them. Better a picture of them in the sunlight than of anything that happened on the pitch today, anyway — at least from my ‘visiting fan’ perspective.

St. James’s Park

Saturday 30th December 2017, 4.20pm (day 2,319)

St. James's Park, 30/12/17

I have been to a lot of football matches in 2017 — around 25, give or take (I have lost count myself). But one distinction was claimed by this, the last match of the year — it had the biggest crowd. Around 52,000 were present at St. James’s Park, Newcastle, today to see them take on the mighty Brighton and Hove Albion — and everyone to leave rather underwhelmed by a 0-0 draw in which neither team seemed willing to take on the initiative. Frankly if there’s one thing the year’s football has shown me it’s that the 220 people at Mossley v Kendal Town last week (5-4) may well be getting rather more for their money. But we keep coming back, week on week. Amazing what tribalism can do isn’t it?

At the Amex stadium

Saturday 16th December 2017, 2.55pm (day 2,305)

Amex flag, 16/12/17

Welcome back to the Amex Stadium, Brighton, venue for several previous shots: all of which were preludes to victories by the mighty Brighton and Hove Albion. Today’s score versus Burnley: 0-0, so I lose my 100% win-only record there, but still, a point’s a point.

Three-nil!

Saturday 9th September 2017, 4.20pm (day 2,207)

Three-nil, 9/9/17

Brighton and Hove Albion’s players celebrate the third goal in today’s 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion, their first win of the season and first in the top division of English football since 1983. And Joe and I were there to see it. Much fun was had by all.
