Pipework in Manchester alley

Wednesday 17th September 2025, 3.40pm (day 5,137)

Pipework, 17/9/25

I don’t often present the shots in portrait orientation but it seems appropriate today, as the verticals are what matter here. Taken in Manchester, but don’t get used to it — even with the new term coming up. Campus will be about a hundred times busier next week than it was today, but that’s OK, because I’m not going to be there.

Bronze bug (first of many)

Saturday 13th May 2023, 1.20pm (day 4,279)

Bronze bug, 13/5/23

Sitting at a table on the forecourt of the Bay Horse pub in Oxenhope, I noticed this metallic-looking bug on the pipe next to me, took this picture, thought no more about it. Another one appeared in Clare’s glass, while fishing it out we discussed what species it was, had no idea. The decision was made that its colouring should be described as ‘bronze’. Then after moving on to watch the football, another appeared. Then another. Not swarms, but a constant stream. I still have no idea what type of insect this is, but there has certainly been a mass hatching of them in the Oxenhope area.

Factory by Low Moor station

Monday 18th April 2022, 1.15pm (day 3,889)

Low Moor factory, 18/4/22

By Low Moor station, in Bradford, there lies this huge industrial complex: silos, pipes, frames, boxes, brickwork, but no people. It hums and burbles to itself as it gets on with whatever it is doing — there is no way to tell what this is, no corporate signage, no advertising. In the coming AI- and machine-ruled future, perhaps the whole world will look like this. But it is interesting to look at, all the same.

Alley wall (health and safety issue?)

Tuesday 13th June 2017, 7.50am (day 2,119)

Overflow, 13/6/17

Second photo in a row of a wall, in effect, though this one made of bricks and mortar rather than rusting corrugated iron. Should the overflow pipe be pouring out near what appear to be a bunch of electrical cables? Probably not, but hey, it ain’t my house.
